Gogol Bordello!
Wednesday, August 29th, 2007
So finally, after two years of being too late to buy Gogol Bordello tickets, I got to go. San Diego was the only show in the (general) area that wasn’t sold out, and fortunately my friend Michelle was going to be in attendance. It was awesome getting to hang out with her for the first time in what seemed like forever, and it was even more awesome getting to do that at a concert by one of my favorite bands. I got to meet some really cool people there too. The DJ that opened had everyone dancing their socks off, the crowd was great (except for Mr. Pointy Elbows of Death that was between Michelle and I in the front for the first few songs), and the band rocked many a face for a full two hours.
There were a bunch of flyers being passed around for an afterparty at the Kava Lounge, and after a lot of driving in circles and some Mapquest help from Cory back at home base (thanks Cory!), we finally found it. The DJ that was there was spinning some really cool Eastern European/world music, and the place was happenin’. After a little while Michelle came in and told us Eugene Hütz (the singer) was outside, so of course we went out and said hi. He chatted with everyone a little and ended up getting us shots of Jager (”Let’s start this shit!”) before getting up to DJ for a while (which, by the way, if anyone lives in NYC I hear he DJs there regularly, and he’s pretty damn good). After hanging out for a little bit longer after the place closed, the band and a bunch of other people moved on to an after afterparty somewhere else, but we were pretty much partied out at that point. It didn’t help that I had to get up the next morning to drive back up and work. During all of this we got to watch the blood moon… it was very surreal.
Here’s a YouTube video from the show, which just so happened to be recorded during the song that Michelle got up onstage during (about two minutes into it). Yay!
To all you guys that went to the show and everyone else who missed it: they’ll be playing another show Thursday, October 25th at the Mayan Theater in Downtown LA. I’m trying to round up a posse of as many people as I can so we can all meet up there and have awesome good times. For anyone who wants to go, I highly recommend buying your tickets as soon as possible, as this show will sell out. Let me know who’s down!
